Built in 1926, an underground cistern was used for decades to hold a large portion of Houston’s public drinking water. After it sprang an irreparable leak, the 85,000 square-foot public reservoir was drained and sat unused and practically forgotten about. The hypnotic beauty of the chamber is reminiscent of Istanbul’s Basilica Cistern but with thin rays of light from open hatches above that illuminate the wide expanse.rn

The Cistern also houses a number of rotating art instillations from artists who make the space their own with light and sound peices.rn

In addition to general viewings of the space every 30 minutes Wednesday to Sunday, special Cistern history tours and meditation sessions are also available. Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life opens at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on October 17. BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life, a new special exhibition, delivers a breathtaking encounter with the inner workings of the human body and shows the effects of poor health, good health and lifestyle choices. In addition to showcasing the wonders of human development, the 100+ preserved human specimens – including whole-body plastinates – demonstrate the complexity, resilience and vulnerability of the human body in distress, disease and optimal health. rn

In the exhibition, designed by BODY WORLDS’ creative and conceptual designer, Dr. Angelina Whalley, visitors follow the human body through the span of time and learn about the latest findings in anatomy, longevity and health. rn

“This special exhibition puts health and wellbeing front and center,” said HMNS Curator of Anthropology Dr. Dirk VanTuerenhout. “Real remains of fellow humans, all of whom donated their bodies during their lifetimes, are on display. Plastinated organs, bones, joints and nerve networks, healthy and unhealthy, provide all visitors with a reality check and serve as a reminder to all to stay as healthy as possible, especially relevant now when health is on everyone’s mind.”rn

Many HMNS guests have asked when BODY WORLDS would make a return to Houston. HMNS hosted the popular exhibits in 2006 and 2008. BODY WORLDS was the most popular exhibition in the Museum’s history, seen by nearly 800,000 visitors combined and more than 50 million people internationally.rn

 rn

Exhibition Highlightsrn

BODY WORLDS is the first exhibition of its kind to inform the visitor about anatomy, physiology and health by viewing real human bodies donated to the Institute for Plastination, established by Dr. von Hagens in 1983. “Dr. von Hagens originally invented plastination in 1983 as a way to teach his students about the structure of the human form,” said Dr. Whalley. “Today, BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life is the perfect way to use this science to showcase the beauty of the human body and remind us that our bodies are our personal responsibility and remain with us throughout our lives.  Our bodies are fragile and vulnerable, yet resilient and forgiving. This exhibit shows that giving up unhealthy lifestyles or adopting healthy changes can make a difference at any age.” rn

 rn

More than 100 specimens were specially curated for this exhibition. Visitors see individual organs and systems, as well as full-body plastinates in various poses including acrobats, football players, and more. Highlights of BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life include:rn

·         A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius – a stunning look at conception and prenatal development, which features a multimedia display on cell division and a remarkable collection of plastinates acquired from historical anatomical collections.rn

·         The Artists’ Gaze – an exploration of the sight and vision of artists Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, who suffered from cataracts and retinal eye disease.rn

·         Centennial Village – a feature on findings from geographic clusters around the world that are home to the longest living people on earth—from Okinawa, Japan and Ovodda in Sardinia to the Hunza region of Pakistan. These people, who defy what longevity means, have been found to share common traits and lifestyle practices that are worthy of attention.”,”link”:{“url”:”/event/body-worlds-%26-the-cycle-of-life/81816/”},”startDate”:”2021-01-20T05:59:59.000Z”,”nextDate”:”2021-01-20T05:59:59.000Z”,”endDate”:”2021-06-01T04:59:59.000Z”,”location”:”Houston Spanning the length of a football field, the hall gives a wonderful perspective of how dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures once lived and interacted with one another. But the new building also offered an opportunity to add more items to the museum’s dynamic permanent collection. And one area that continues to fascinate the Western World is Ancient Egypt.rnrnWith hundreds of artifacts dating back more than 5,000 years, the hall is divided up not by time period but by theme. Five areas offer a glimpse into Egyptian life: environment, religion, politics, mummies and mummification and the discovery of ancient Egypt.rnrnHMNS has partnered with museums in Boston, Germany and the United Kingdom to rotate artifacts for a more dynamic and ever-changing exhibit experience.rnSave 45% off admission to HMNS and other area attractions with tCityPASS icon t rnrnrnrnPermanent exhibits include:rnrnCockrell Butterfly CenterrnThe Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is a stunning, living exhibit that showcases hundreds of live butterflies in a naturalistic rainforest setting. The central conservatory is a dramatic three-story glass cone filled with tropical plants and exotic butterflies. During a typical visit, one can expect to see 50 to 60 different species of the world’s largest and most colorful butterfly species, flying through the balmy air, hovering over flowers or sipping fruit juice – and occasionally, landing on visitors! The butterflies are raised on special butterfly farms in tropical Asia and North, Central, and South America, and shipped to the Center in their chrysalis form.rnrnHall of PalentologyrnThe Museum’s Hall of Paleontology contains more than 450 fossils and fossil replicas, providing a vivid glimpse into the incredible 3.5-billion-year story of life on Earth. From the humble trilobite to the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex, this exhibit hall will bring you face-to-face with the creatures that once ruled our planet. The 30,000-square-foot hall, along with additional exhibit space and classrooms, opened in summer 2012 and represents the largest expansion in the museum’s history.rnrnWeiss Energy HallrnEach of the 12 sections of the newly-renovated Weiss Energy Hall is full of all-new immersive excursions into the world of energy, including the The Energy Explorations Theater, Formation, Geology, Geography, Exploration, In Drilling, Geovator, Reservoir and Production, Processes and Products, Transportation and Distribution and Alternative Energy Sources.rnrnWelch Chemistry HallrnThe Welch Chemistry Hall brings science to life through experiments, interactive displays, computer touch screens, holograms, videos and other creative installations that will help visitors gain a better understanding of chemical processes and the importance of chemistry in the everyday world. Discover how elements are the building blocks of all matter, including our own bodies, and see how chemistry innovations have changed the world.rnrnCullen Hall of Gems and MineralsrnThe spectacular Cullen Hall houses the world’s finest display-quality collection of gems and minerals. See more than 750 beautifully crystallized mineral specimens, including some of the world’s rarest and most beautiful examples. Walk-around display cases and fiber-optic lighting offer an optimum view of these dazzling treasures. The nearby Eby Hall of Mineral Science explores the history and science of mineralogy.rnrnStrake Hall of MalacologyrnMalacology is the study of molluscs-invertebrate creatures with soft, unsegmented bodies, many of which house themselves in shells. This fascinating and highly diverse group of animals includes more than 100,000 species, ranging in size from snails so small that we can barely see them to giant squids more than 60 feet long. The Strake Hall of Malacology highlights these creatures through models, fossils, dioramas, living specimens and hundreds of rare and spectacular shells.rnrnFarish Hall of Texas WildlifernThe Farish Hall features realistic displays of alligators, river otters, mountain lions, and other animals that can be found in our state, as well as some that have vanished over time. A four-screen video wall provides a dramatic overview of the seven biotic provinces within Texas, allowing visitors to learn more about the plants, animals, and topography of these unique regions. The interactive computer component will challenge you to sharpen your knowledge of Texas wildlife, including endangered species.rnrnEvelyn and Herbert Frensley Hall of African WildlifernViewers of the hall will experience the excitement and diversity of African wildlife. Over 120 specimens representing more than 70 species will be on display, including 42 species of birds and 28 species of mammals. Many rare and endangered species will be showcased, including Okapi, Lowland Gorilla, Mandrill and Scimitar-horned Oryx. Additionally, many species rarely seen in museums will be displayed, including Gerenuk, Giant Forest Hog, Guenons and other forest primates, and a variety of birds. The natural panoramas containing family groups of Aoudad sheep, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Greater Kudu, Rock Hyrax, Spotted Hyaena, Egyptian Goose and Great Blue Turaco are a special treat for visitors of all ages.rnrnFoucault PendulumrnFirst exhibited in 1851 at the World’s Fair in Paris, the Foucault Pendulum (named after Jean Bernard Leon Foucault, the French physicist who invented it) is a visual demonstration of the Earth’s rotation. Throughout the day, the direction of the pendulum’s swing appears to change. Actually the Earth is turning under the pendulum as it swings. At Houston’s latitude (30° N.) the pendulum will precess through 180° or halfway around each day. During this time, it will knock down all of the pins. The time required for the pendulum to complete its swing is a function of its length. Swinging from a cable over 60 feet long, the pendulum’s period is just over 7 seconds. The pendulum receives the energy needed to keep swinging from a magnet surrounding the cable at its top. As the pendulum reaches the middle of its swing, it closes a circuit that activates the electromagnet. The magnet pulls the cable away from the center position. The pendulum keeps on swinging as the world turns below.rnrnGreater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau – Member”,”mediaid”:140,”rank”:1,”sdate”:”2014-08-08T05:00:00.000Z”,”mobile”:false,”categories”:[{“catid”:2133},{“catid”:2136}],”showweb”:true,”subcategories”:[{“subcatid”:3338},{“subcatid”:3380}]},”tacatid”:2,”accountudfs”:[{“name”:”Date Joined / Start Date”,”value”:”1986-08-08T00:00:00.000Z”,”digits”:0,”fieldid”:111,”typeid”:2,”type”:”Date”,”value_raw”:”1986-08-08T00:00:00.000Z”,”value_string”:”08/08/1986″},{“name”:”Membership Level”,”valuearray”:[{“listid”:10033,”value”:”Board Members”},{“listid”:1032,”value”:”Choice”}],”digits”:0,”fieldid”:124,”typeid”:12,”type”:”Multi-Select”,”value_raw”:[{“listid”:10033,”value”:”Board Members”},{“listid”:1032,”value”:”Choice”}],”value_string”:”Board Members, Choice”},{“listid”:10031,”name”:”Billing Cycle”,”value”:”Yearly”,”digits”:0,”fieldid”:2432,”typeid”:7,”type”:”Dropdown”,”value_raw”:{“listid”:10031,”value”:”Yearly”},”value_string”:”Yearly”},{“name”:”Contractual Revenue”,”value”:550,”digits”:2,”fieldid”:2433,”typeid”:1,”type”:”Currency”,”value_raw”:550,”value_string”:”$550″},{“listid”:10436,”name”:”Harris County Precinct”,”value”:”Precinct 7″,”digits”:0,”fieldid”:2806,”typeid”:7,”type”:”Dropdown”,”value_raw”:{“listid”:10436,”value”:”Precinct 7″},”value_string”:”Precinct 7″},{“listid”:10441,”name”:”City Council District”,”value”:”District D”,”digits”:0,”fieldid”:2807,”typeid”:7,”type”:”Dropdown”,”value_raw”:{“listid”:10441,”value”:”District D”},”value_string”:”District D”}],”description”:”

Farish Hall of Texas Wildlife

The Farish Hall underwent a major renovation, reopening in fall 2014. With more than 425 specimens, representing well over 250 species on display, the hall offers the most species-rich assemblage of Texas wildlife anywhere. On display are a diverse array of species that one might encounter here in Texas, both presently and in the past.  Current-day specimens like alligators, waterfowl, and white-tailed deer are on display, as are endangered and extinct species like ocelots, whooping cranes, jaguars, and the passenger pigeon. Some animals, such as a rattlesnake and skunk, actually “come to life” with robotic movements and sounds after being activated by museum visitors. A total of 7 dioramas within the exhibit replicate the natural environments that the animals lived in. Through the dioramas, and additional kiosks, patrons learn of invasive species that threaten native species and their habitats, as well as extinct and vanishing species, and aberrantly colored individual animals.rn
